Don't really care very much about this tournament, but wonder why they would pit North vs South in the opening game. The already play each other twice in the MIC. Do they draw the tournament or seed it?

Sorry you don't care, its a great tournament. It is drawn and North and South only play once a year in the MIC.

Oh.

Did there used to be a HS tourney (not sectionals, regionals, or semi-state) that featured Valley HS teams playing at HC?

My favorites to win the Classic are:

Terre Haute North
Sullivan
Rockville
West Vigo

That Sullivan-Rockville first round game is sure to be a good one. I can't wait til this thing starts. I won't be getting to the games until about 2pm, so if anyone else please share some insight.

Close counts when you haven't won a game all season and you were down 14-2 at the end of 1. I don't think South has won a game all season? North should have beat South by 20. I haven't seen any Indiana High School basketball this season so it's really difficult to say, but from what I understand South is just not very good. Seems as if ole Tornado Mike Saylor got out at the right time. Seems if maybe he saw the writing on the wall? What do you think?

NOTE: As of 8:00 p.m. 356 Pizza Hut Pizzas have been served at the Pizza Hut Classic, saw this on Rick Semmler's Twitter. WOW! Terre Haute can put away some pizza - also shows us that Terre Haute supports local basketball. Hopefully the HC can start to see some of this! I think we've seen some improvement in this area this year. (Not that I want to get into an attendance discussion)

I was there and North should of spanked south but they played very poorly. South beat west vigo but has lost all of their other games, worst south team i've seen since watching hs ball. I dont think ridge really knows what he is doing out there but Saylor def. picked a nice time to call it quits bc there is not much talent to work with.

Also just my opinion but I think Sullivan can and maybe should be the favorite to win it all. They have some nice players to go along with Rhett. I thought the sullivan-rockville game was a better played game than the north-south game. Both Rockville and Sullivan surprised me in a good way today, very good teams.

The old Wabash Valley Classic (I don't know the years) played some games in the Hulman Center. It was before most schools consolidated so the field was much larger.

Like what kind of consolidation years are you talking about? Like Freelandville consolidating into Oaktown in 1932, or Carlise HS consolidating into Sullivan High School in 1968?

The last Wabash Valley Tournament game was played in 1971. The championship game was played in West Vigo's gym. Marshall beat Sullivan for the championship 74 - 71.

The Hulman Center opened on December 14, 1973

There was NEVER any Pizza Hut Classic games played at the Hulman Center, nor were there ever any Wabash Valley Tournament games played on the Indiana State campus, during any decade for any tournament year.

P.S. Also, the Wabash Valley Tournament was never called the Wabash Valley Classic.

Just curious...where or who did you ever hear any of those urban legends about the WVT from?

Neither TH North, West Vigo, TH South or Northview ever played in the Nineties in the Hulman Center, under the banner of the Pizza Hut Classic.

The Pizza Hut Classic (Wabash Valley Tournament) was just restarted 12 years ago, in the year 2000.

The only confusing thing thats ever happened to the Wabash Valley Tournament (Pizza Hut Classic) since its rejuvenation is, what genius invited first year Champion, Hamilton Southeastern to this dance?:krazy:

Not sure of the time frame, but prior to the Wabash Valley Classic coming back the three Vigo Co
schools and Northview did indeed play in Hulman Center every year...and Pizza Hut had some type of sponsorship of the event. If my memory serves me correctly it was around last Friday in January.

And all thats been offered is "Not sure of the time frame, some kind of sponsorship, and if my memory serves me correctly" You're going have to do better than that.

Obtaining accurate information from the nineties should be a piece-of-cake. Obtaining data from over 40 years, not-so-much. Heck, I even came with gym where the last WVT was played in, in 1971.

Has anyone other than JLandrus seen Jordan Houser from WV play basketball? The kid is only 5'9 but the kid can strait get it. Let me put it into perspective for you. He ends up with 28 in the game vs. North - he had 15 in the first half, North had 17 in the first half - he nearly outscored them on his own. It was the closest thing to JimmerTime that I have ever seen in High School basketball. Probably (no exaggeration) was the best individual 5 minutes of high school basketball I've personally seen. If he was about 2 or 3 inches taller no doubt he could play at Indiana State. He's like 5'9 standing on a dictionary ok - he just aint tall enough. Very impressive.

Side note: Kinda wish the Sycamores would have given more of a look to the O'Leary kid - not a bad basketball player.

Hey, I'd take someone 5'9" if he's good enough. How tall is Jackson at PU? And Hulls plays about 5'9" at IU.

Let me start by saying, watching Sullivan is a little like watching North for the past couple season fail to pass the ball into the paint to Gant - they just don't know how to get it to Smith (learn how to feed the post). That said, Marshall was doubling down on him almost every time and he was getting fouled, held, slapped you name it the entire game - the kid is a grown ass man playing basketball with a bunch of little kids. He had like 5 or 6 blocked shots tonight and not like get a piece of it blocks, like I blocked it with my elbow type blocks!

Pros:

- D1 ready body, he moves fairly well without the ball and he doesn't mind banging inside.

- He can step out and shoot the ball. I think he shot could use a little work, early comparisons to Matt Renn are very fair. Renn had a great mid range jumper as I recall, Smith needs to work on this part of his game a little bit.

- Passes the ball fairly well - he doesn't force anything, got into the hands of his shooters (Sullivan has a couple) and let them do the work. Again he was being doubled teamed throughout this one.

- Rebounds well - I actually think he will be a better rebounder in college than he in high school because he doesn't use his hight advantage enough, he literally finds a guy to put a body on every time when sometimes he could just go up and get the ball on his own - I think that will serve him well at the next level. If that makes any sense to anyone?? lol

- Good shot blocker. Had a few big ones tonight

Cons:

- He plays at Sullivan HS. He's not used to playing against kids his size and bigger than him on a daily basis. I think this takes some adjusting for sure. With a kid like Gant, you know he's played (and played well) agains the best high school basketball has to offer - don't discount this.

- Didn't see him do much with his back to the basket. Not to say he can't - I have only seen him play a hand full of times and this was the first time this season, but he didn't do much with his back to the basket.

- Too unselfish? At times I think so - he was looking to pass the ball a little much. He doesn't get enough touches to pass as often as he does.

All that said, I doubt he redshirts - even with Burnett and Arop coming eligible

I've seen Houser play several games over his career at WV.He's stronger this season and really takes a beating because he drives the ball a lot besides shooting 3s.He has pretty long arms for his height and actually plays a little taller than he looks.Doubt he'll get any D-1 offers but definitely can play somewhere.

Smith is definitely a strong kid and I agree that he won't need to redshirt to add strength.Other parts of his game may need work but I expect him to play.I also suspect that next season we may be able to play a traditional 2 guards,2 forwards and a center to get our size on the floor. As far as Smith playing at Sullivan,I'm sure he gets all sorts of competition in AAU ball the rest of the year.

Rhetts muscles, body mass, size, thickness, and strength...ALL comes from the Stockberger DNA side of his family (his Mom Maria). Sorry Thad.

ALL the Stockbergers that I can remember back to Maria's Uncles, Great Uncles, Aunts and Grandparents from the 50's and 60's were all big boned and athletic hosses. They were all made that way.

It was a VERY physical game. Tough defense from both teams...I think the score at the end if the first quarter was 4-5.. Very hard to penetrate early on...

Matt O'Leary was the best player on the court "for that game". He wasn't being guarded like Rhett was...but he took over the game late. Juniors Lewis and Blank played well for THN.

Rhett looked best when he was handling the ball and facing the basket.
