Softball tries to correct their offensive issues from this past weekend when they go to Bloomington this afternoon to take on the Hoosiers at 4pm GameTracker (http://www.cstv.com/gametracker/launch/gt_wsoftbl.html?event=722143&school=cs&sport=wsoftbl&camefrom=&startschool=&) provides live coverage.
Be nice to get a win going into conference weekend with Bradley.

To give you some idea of the level of play and parity in the MVC softball this year, here are some league scores in non-conference action this week so far:
Missouri State 13 Kansas 8
Illinois State 2 Iowa 1
Evansville 7 Butler 1
Evansville 8 Butler 0
UNI 6 Iowa State 4
Creighton 3 Kansas 2
Creighton 4 Kansas 3 (10 innings)
Nebraska 5 Drake 2
Nebraska 7 Drake 4
Southern Illinois 5 Eastern Illinois 1

When the softball RPI figures finally come out, the league should be ranked somewhere around 7th - 11th in the country. To put that in perspective, MVC baseball is currently sitting at 17th.

Another fall from ahead loss for the Sycamores today. While they certainly made mistakes that proved costly, they were robbed today by one of the worst umpire calls I've seen in a long time. In the top of the 6th, Armour was on first base with no outs when Boyer hit a ball into the hole. The SS had started toward the middle and then went to the hole and fielded the ball and made the throw to 2nd. The play was not close, so Armour didn't even slide, yet the field umpire calls her out on the force when she is standing on the bag before the ball arrives. In the crowd, I was surprised the SS even made the throw based on where Armour was when she fielded the ball. Armour was stunned and just stood on the bag and didn't leave after the call. Coldren came out to argue for a long time. Anyway, the next batter - Childress - hits a 2 run HR that should have been a 3 run shot and then the Sycamores win in regulation if that occurs. Instead, they manage to let it get away with errors.

I can't figure them out. They are something like 3-6 in one run games. They have only been beaten "soundly" once - the first game at Wichita was 8-1. Other than that, all of the losses have been very competitive. Wood was good today, but McCurdy really struggled. I'd guess they didn't want to throw Wood too much so that she was fresh for an important weekend at Bradley. This was the first action for Childress since the opening weekend, and getting her lively bat back in the line-up should help. She was the culprit of a big error in the bottom of the 7th, however, so sometimes you trade offense for defense.
Lot of season left to get the ship righted. Unfortunately for their record, the 6 games that they had canceled so far due to weather are all against teams they probably would do well against - as going 4-2 or better in that stretch probably would have been considered poor.
