What would you go after for 2010's graduating class? That's the one that can sign starting in November...

I'm going after the nastiest C or PF I can get my hands on. Anyone over 6'6" would get some looks. Your thoughts?

Think this is a no brainer myself. State could really use two more legit big bodies and one of them needs to be a bonafide post player to help relieve pressure off the guards.

I will take a athletic PF... Or a Center would also be nice... I don't are if he can play a lick of def. you can teach someone how to play good def. I mean that's effort based. I want someone with a post skill set. A guy who can play with his back to the basket or turn and face up... Oh wait we wont get a guy like this we are Indiana State...

Then just give me a big man that can dunk the ball that has some meat on his bones. For real none of this weak sauce..

At least everyone is clear on what we want as fans...no PG's...no SG's...no SF's...kinda laughed when I saw nobody had picked any of these options.

LOL - Good "D" is perceptual...and NOT easily taught. It also involves both PHYSICAL & MENTAL toughness, characteristics which rarely come in tandem. "Defense" has never been the glory phase of basketball...especially as the game has taken on an "urban" image over the past 30 yrs. The roar of the crowd is most noticable after a "twister reverse dunk," rather than a "twister floor burn." The developing egos of youth are not immune to these cues.

Great defenders are a rarity in today's game.

Yeah because most kids refuse to get down and play hard def. It's all about coaching and the mentality you instill in your players. I think if a guy wants to get down after it and play hard every possesion he can play good def. Obviously foot work, speed and athletic ability come into play. But we all know players that had all of those qualities plus Physical and mental toughness that don't make good def. players...

I am just saying that a solid Off. skilled set is prefered by myself over a def. skill set. Are you suggesting that you can teach a player how to play off. eaiser than teaching a kid how to play def.? On the off. side of the ball some guys got it and some guys don't.

But I agree to many players would rather dunk the ball and chuck the 3 than play good hard def. everyone knows that.

I would love to have a strong 6'6" defensive minded PF. I don't think that we could ever get a BIG NASTY Center. Those guys are going to the big schools.

Statistics show that big 6'11/7'0" centers usually aren't what everybody expects them to be.

Some of the better players ISU has ever had have been "under-sized" C/PFs. Kante, Matt Renn, Brad Miley, Matt Burgess, etc........ We are never going to get a dominant 6'10-6'11" kid.

Give me 6'6" 255 PF like Lucas O'Rear from Norther Iowa. He ate our big men up this year. Or somebody like Bucky Cox, Jay Tunnell, Randall Faulker.

The 7'0 kids in our league are not dominant. They are usually slow and un-athletic (Jordan Egleseder UNI, Pieter van Tongeren UE, Garrett Stutz WSU, or our own Brant Lietnaker)

Therefore, I vote PF. Justin Gant from Terre Haute North, perhaps.

Hey I second that vote... He would be a great add... But I don't know that Tunnell actually falls under the type of big man I am looking for right now. I want somone with a post up game. Jay did not have much of a back to the basket game. Until this year most people (atleast myself) were not happy with what Jay had done at Indiana State...

These are two aspects of any player that McKenna will recruit in the future. He now has the depth to play his style of basketball, and these two aspects are crucial. Morgan has a very good point. Offensive skill sets are very hard to teach. However, to teach good defense at the college level is very tough also because it is not focused on nearly enough at the high school level. How many freshman do you see come into ISU or the NCAA for that matter that are skilled on the ball defenders? If they are not, it takes time to break bad habits. Let's face it. A lot of skilled offensive high school players can get away with a lot of bad defensive habits in high school. Defense is a lot about effort, as Morgan pointed out, and teaching the team concept of defense with communication, help, switching, etc. That's where McKenna & Co. come in. I think you will see a very good example of a Kevin McKenna style team next year both offensively and defensively. :sycamores:

As far as ISU.......... TWO.

Harry Marshall
Marcus Howard

I don't remember any others that were that good defensively as freshmen.
