GASPAROVICH EARNS PRESEASON MVC ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Sycamores Tabbed Seventh In Team Poll

ST. LOUIS – In her short time with the Indiana State University women’s soccer team, sophomore Alison Gasparovich has been no stranger to honors given by the Missouri Valley Conference. After earning all-conference honorable mention and all-freshman team honors following her freshman season, Gasparovich can now add Preseason All-MVC honors to her résumé.

Gasparovich, one of only two sophomores to make the 12-player list, led the Sycamores in both shots (34) and shots on goal (18) last season while playing in 19 games. The midfielder, out of Overland Park, Kan., totaled two goals and one assist during her freshman campaign, including the game-winning goal in overtime during the MVC Tournament against Drake.

The preseason poll, conducted by the head coaches from each league team, also ranks the order of finish for each MVC school. Indiana State received 11 points in the poll, earning them the seventh spot in the conference. The Sycamores, who made it to the MVC Tournament championship game last year, placed in a tie for sixth in last season’s preseason poll.

The Illinois State Redbirds, who were co-regular season champions in 2008, were picked to win the MVC title, receiving 44 total points and three first-place votes to edge second-place Missouri State (37 points) in the poll. Creighton came in third place with 32 points, followed by defending champion Evansville (31), Drake (26), Northern Iowa (15) and Indiana State (11).

Although a player from each school is not required to make the preseason all-conference team, each school is represented on the list, led by Illinois State with three selections (defender Shannon Eccleston, midfielder Raquel Rattray and midfielder/defender Danielle Mutters). Missouri State (midfielder Samantha Aguilar and defender Jordan Reppell), Drake (forwards Crystal Townley and Elizabeth Woerle) and Northern Iowa (midfielder Chelsie Hochstedler and goalkeeper Lauren Potzman) all earned two selections. The remaining three selections came from Indiana State (Gasparovich), Creighton (midfielder Emily Orbell) and Evansville (defender Kasey Kutzler).

The Sycamores open the season with an exhibition game this Sunday, August 16, at Western Michigan. ISU opens the regular season the following Friday, August 21, when they travel to Southeast Missouri State.

it's ridiculous how the women's soccer team was picked to finish in last place after making the championship match of last year's MVC soccer tournament.
