North has its own highly regarded quarterback returning in senior Chris O’Leary, although he didn’t see enough action during the Patriots’ 2-9 season last year to earn any postseason honors.

O’Leary did pass for more than 900 yards while playing less than five full games, however, and the Patriots scored 117 points in their last three contests — unfortunately, while allowing 122.

Offensive fireworks, therefore, could occur at North tonight, where O’Leary could hand off to four-year running back Ben King or get the ball in a number of ways to explosive junior Daniel Gabbard.

Look Chris comes from a grea family of athletes but I don't think that Chris is any better than Kyle Tony who came out of THS a few years ago and he was not able to even get a look at QB, the only thing he has over Kyle is a little more hight, which I realize is a big thing considering Kyle was only 6'0, but I doubt this kid will get much of a look... just my view.

I actually disagree with you here. I saw Toney play a lot and I have watched O'Leary a lot.(at least when he has played) O'Leary is bigger and faster than Toney. He also has a better arm. O'Leary's problem is that he is always hurt.

Well you kind of agreed and kind of disagreed. I said that O'Leary was a bigger QB, however I think KT was a little quicker. KT had 51 - 52 400 meter speed and that's a decent indicator of speed. I mean ISU WR Bryant Kent has 48 400 meter speed and he's quick! I have honestly not seem him play enough to judge his arm over KT's but I will take your word for it. I guess my thought was this, Kyle Tony had a pretty impressive highschool carrer at QB and he never even really got a chance at State... I suspect that O'Leary would be a little out of his league... I am open to your thoughts?

I watched Toney play a lot and I have seen O'Leary play, when he's been healthy. I don't completely remember how fast Toney looked in high school. I know O'Leary looks fast, for high school, and as a senior in high school, looks like a more physical specimen, athlete than Toney looked. I think O'Leary runs the ball a little more than Toney did so maybe that is why I don't remember his speed. I don't think the arm strength is even up for debate but I could be wrong. Toney did have an outstanding high school career and O'Leary has yet to come close to playing a full high school season. Barrett made a huge mistake 2 years ago putting a senior at QB over a sophomore O'Leary. North was terrible and the senior had no business playing QB in the MIC. At least O'Leary could have learned on the job.

BTW, if your not busy come to the THN game friday against Castle. Castle is supposedly really good and it might be a good indication of how good O'Leary is.

Thanks for that response! Very insightful.. I must say I am a little bias because Kyle is a pretty good friend of mine. But I won't go out on a limb and make any outlandish comments because I have only seen O'Leary play a handful of times. Perhaps I will be able to make it to the North Side on Friday, even though I will always be a Brave! lol

Offensively, Terre Haute North returns seven starters that averaged nearly 111 yards on the ground and over 166 yards through the air. Coach Barrett looks to run the spread again this year and will look to senior quarterback Chris O’Leary to head the attack. O’Leary, the first four-year starting quarterback in school history, missed several games due to a shoulder injury but still threw for 919 yards and nine touchdowns in just five games. He averaged nearly 184 yards per game.

Are you kidding me? O'Leary started for 4 years? Yeah, if you count his freshman year starting solely on the Freshman team and Sophomore year starting solely on JV. Current Sycamore, Matt Seliger, was the starter O'Leary's Freshman year.

Also, I went to school with current Rose-Hulman coach Steve Englehart. He started the second game of the varsity season his Freshman year and then every game after that until he graduated.

Hey B! I think you mean current Engineer coach, correct? Sure wish we could have an Englehart as QB every year at North...man he was a great high school QB!

Looking forward to seeing you at the game tonight! Hope the Mrs. and the little guy are doing well!

Yes, the 4-year starter line was incorrect. O'Leary did see a little varsity action as a freshman and even threw a touchdown pass or two. He was looking to start as a sophomore but suffered an injury in summer basketball and was forced to sit out the entire summer camp and early season practices. THN ended up going with a senior quarterback for the opener and stuck with him through the season, though O’Leary did see some action both at quarterback and at receiver once he returned.

And you’re right, Englehart was a stud and a four year starter…and is doing a great job at Rose…

Huge first win for the Patriots and O'Leary:

The Patriots did their part to make the evening a complete one by leading all the way and winning 32-13. Chris O’Leary, who suffered an injury at Castle last season that cost him more than half his football season and all of his basketball campaign, got revenge in the sweetest possible fashion Friday, passing for 333 yards and rushing for 83 more, including a tone-setting 70-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

O'Leary's stats: 19-29, 333 yards, 3 TDs, 1 Int, 13 rushes for 83 yards, 2 rushing TDs

While the numbers on paper might not have been as impressive as last week's, O'Leary had another huge game for the North Patriots tonight as they came back to beat the South Braves 30-28.
12-25 for 166 yards and 2 tds, 19 rushes for 113 yards and 2 tds, three two point conversions.

The 2:15 mark of the WTHI highlights is why I think he would be a good pick up for the Sycamores. That and he is a good runner.

I would like to see him improve throwing while on the run. THN runs a lot of sprint outs and bootlegs. They do this to offset some of the advantages the other MIC teams have as far as their DL against THN's OL. They run away from the rush and try to wear out the other teams. It don't work very often, but it was a big key a couple years ago when they beat Ben Davis and seems like a smart plan.

BTW, #3 for THN, who caught both those bombs, is only a Freshman. He's only played 2 varsity games, but that kid is going to be a big time D-1 prospect. THN actually has 3 other freshman starters who all have a chance to play big time college football. One of which is Nate Blanks "little" brother Calvin. A TE and DL for North who is listed at 6'6" 220.

The Brazil Times preview of the North - Northview game tonight has a lot of good things to say about O'Leary:

One new factor in this year's edition will be senior quarterback, Chris O'Leary, who missed last year's game against the Knights. His athleticism is the driving force behind the Patriot's offense and he's helped them to 32 and 30 points in a 2-0 start.

Overall, O'Leary has combined for nearly 700 yards with his arm and his feet in just two games.

(O'Leary) is a great athlete and he's got a very good command of their offense. They run spread/option so the quarterback is not only a passer, but he's a runner," Gettle said. "He's had two outstanding ball games so far throwing and running. He's a big part of their offense and probably a team leader I would imagine."

In the opening win against Castle, O'Leary completed 19-of-29 passes for 333 yards with explosive running back Daniel Gabbard hauling in eight passes for 103 yards, Tyler King had four catches for 91 yards. Meanwhile, O'Leary also ran for 83 yards.

"He just presents all sorts of challenges on the outside," Gettle said of O'Leary. "He's very elusive, gets outside on the option and makes good reads and he's had some success throwing the ball. Offensively they are very explosive, they've got good receivers, good running backs and good slot receivers."

It should be a shootout at Northview tonight with both teams averaging over 30 points a game and Northview averaging over 40.

O'Leary and the Patriots survived a shootout with Northview tonight. The Knights were pretty effective at slowing North's passing game, but couldn't stop the running game. O'Leary rushed 9 times for 111 yards, including a 60 yard TD run. He also scored from 3 yards out to open the game. Despite throwing two interceptions early, O'Leary still passed for 167 yards on 10-16 passing. Daniel Gabbard and Ben King also had huge games, scoring 4 and 2 TDs, respectively.

Big game for the 3-0 Patriots next week as they travel to Center Grove (#1 until Carmel beat them 17-14 tonight).

Good god, how many QB's do we need?

We are going to be 5 deep at the QB position, maybe this is a common thing at Purdue or Notre Dame - programs that seem to filter NFL QB's. But this aint quarterback U, hell I don't know what "U" this is.

But welcome SocalFB - hopefully your guy can lead us to the promise land, nothing else has been able to do so. Glad to have your support, now let's just hope that you don't turn your back on us if Fouch is not the starting QB or something like that is going on. I am all for you being a Sycamore supporter because you are a fan of a kid that is new to the program.

My guess is that O'Leary will be a WR. He's done it in the past and did it well. I believe King has already been moved, Seliger is not going to play, Roberts will hopefully go back to WR, and I'm not sure about Travis Johnson. Etnier, who I've heard good things about, will only be a Freshman(RS) so that leaves the two new guys and Stutzriem to fight it out, unless I'm forgetting someone.

TMiles will figure this out -- seriously, having TOO many QBs / talent is a 'problem?' :krazy:

I'm betting that Miles is talking to these kids every day about their place on the team NOT necessarily the position.

Lot of time until the first game at Cincinnati...TJ, Any word if State will fill that open date (Sept 11) on the schedule; another money game or Div II/III/NAIA opponent?

End of the day -- it's a GOOD problem!

Well, we technically have 7 I think. Roberts will gp back to receiver and I think King is already officially a WR. I tend to think O'Leary will be a WR as well. I don't think Seliger will ever see the field again and maybe Johnson either. I think only Stutzriem and the 2 new guys are in the mix for the starting job but we will see.

O'leary is a pure quarterback and and very smart kid. You are right however that he has played some reciver, 4 downs his sophmore year at Center Grove, 1 catch for 4 yards I was there. O'leary is planning on redshirting which I beleive will give him a chance to start as a redshirt sophmore.

I agree with sycamores2 that O'Leary will be a QB at State, but things do change over time so you never know what will could end up happening. However, I take the idea of having him redshirt as a cue that he will stay at QB. State is deep in the QB position the next year or two, but redshirting will give O'Leary a chance to learn the system and get tutoring from some older quarterbacks (with good D1 experience) for a couple of years and still have 3 years to compete for the starting job.

Well that is the game I remember.(I went to a lot of games as my cousin played football for North during this time) I thought he had done it more but I guess not. Of course I'm not sure King ever played WR and he has been moved. O'Leary may very well play QB I'm not sure.

King was in that slot position that Gabbard now plays so well, he played the fullback position in the backfield with O'leary the last three years but will be a safety in college. O'leary is definitely good enough to play reciever but none the less is a much better quarterback and could turn out to be a real field general if he can stay healthy. He definitely has the work ethic to become a great player, during basketball season he is throwing after his basketball practices and is working out during a fitness center class in school to get his strength back.

Chris has been my QB since 5th grade, thats all he wants to do, he's a field general. Hes going to school and hopes to be a coach afterwards, coach Barrett trusted him to make an audible anytime in the game, he could see things in the defense I never recognized from my position in the slot, theres no question in my mind that he is going to start in the next few years and do nothing but help the team.
