I've spent so much time watching the top players from the state of Indiana and talking to coaches and AAU folks about the state, I decided to do some rankings.
I won't be going as deep as many in the Hoosier State but of the kids I will rank in the Class of 2011, '12 and '13, I have seen all but one on multiple occasions.
So, I feel pretty good about the rankings.
I'll start with the Class of 2013 which could end up being one of the best we have seen in a while across the Hoosier State. There are some serious players in the class statewide.
And I'll put Indianapolis Cathedral small forward Collin Hartman at the top. The 6-foot-6 Hartman is so smooth and so versatile. He dominated a few games I saw at the adidas May Classic and was solid as a freshman on the varsity level last season.
Hartman (photo) has a ton of college attention and deserves the top spot at this point. Plus, the best thing about Hartman is that it looks like he will get bigger and stronger.
Here's the rankings:
Collin Hartman, Indianapolis Cathedral, 6-6: The kid can do it all. Mother played for Butler and the younger Hartman has a bright future. Lots of Division I attention.
V.J. Beachem, Fort Wayne Harding, 6-5: He'll add some bulk to his frame and is just one of those kids you watch and think he's going to be special. He long and so skilled for his age. Look for big things from Beachem.
Basil Smotherman, Heritage Christian, 6-5: When he develops a better mid-range game, Smotherman is likely to be a top-50 prospect nationally.
Devin Davis, Indianapolis Warren Central, 6-6: Davis does a little bit of everything and he does it with a high motor. Best rebounder in the class?
Darryl Baker, Jeffersonville, 6-2: Sat our all of last season after a knee injury but has come back stronger than ever. A hot commodity with Division I schools.
Zak Irvin, Hamilton Southeastern, 6-4: Remember, these rankings are based on future potential. Irvin didn't play varsity as a freshman but has been sensational during the spring. Love this kids game. Indiana among those that have offered.
Bryson Scott, Fort Wayne Northrup, 6-1: The best of the Scott twins - although Brenton is also in the top 10 - he's a little taller and can score several different ways.
Demetrius Jackson, Mishawaka Marian, 6-2: I had no idea who he was when I was watching a game earlier in the spring. Wow! He made a huge first impression. Averaged 15 points as a freshman and is a kid down the road that will be able to run the show.
Milos Kostic, Hammond Bishop Noll, 6-8: He's a down low player but isn't too physical. Has a nice stroke from the baseline and smart kid with the ball.
Brenton Scott, Fort Wayne Northup, 5-11: The smaller of the twins, Brenton Scott is the better outside shooter of the brothers at this point.
Note far off the list: Richard Freeman, Indianapolis Lawrence Central, 6-7; Zavier Turner, Indianapolis Pike, 5-10; Phillip Owens, Heritage Christian, 5-11; Franko House, Fort Wayne Concord, 6-5; LaBradford Sebree, Kokomo, 6-3; John Murray, Indianapolis North Central, 6-2; Alex Etherington, Hamilton Heights, 6-5; Kendall Broome, Ben Davis, 5-10.
