Richard, a 6-foot-4 1/2, 180-pound small forward, averaged 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game at Richards High School. The school was one of the best in Chicago last season [26-3 record], and it’s the alma mater of Miami Heat All-Star Dwyane Wade. Richard transferred to Richards from Whitney Young High School in Chicago. He is friends with Isiah Martin, another Chicagoan who will play for the Sycamores this winter.

Richard chose ISU among offers from Loyola, Eastern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Northern Illinois. At various stages of his recruitment, Illinois, Wisconsin, Illinois State, Drake, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Wisconsin-Green Bay were all interested.

Richard was a fourth-team Class AA Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star during his junior season. One recruiting web site rated Richard the 28th best recruit in Illinois in his graduating class. Richard plays for the Chicago-based Meanstreets AAU team, coached by former NFL receiver Tai Streets.

Richard, a 6-6 wing, is a strong, athletic and physical player on the basketball court. Last year, as a junior, Richard came to the forefront as one of the elite players in the state of Illinois while leading Richards to a 20-0 start during the regular season.

Found this article today. I've now seen Richard listed at several different heights. I also emailed Brian Stinnette at ChicagoHoops.com to see if he had any photos and analysis on Richard.

From a Chicago area website:

The 6-5 Indiana State commit has been looking very good lately in the Illinoishsbasketball.com/ Full Package fall league.
He had 34 points this week (the rest of his team had 28 combined) including a number of big dunks and big threes. Even more impressive is that he was being guarded by 6-6 F Justin Jarosz who is considered one of the better defenders in the state. This kid has vastly improved his perimeter skills and is getting better every time i see him. I really think that he could be a big time high major player, and if he keeps his commitment and goes to ISU he will be the top player in the MVC.

Yeah, I mean, why even say it in the first place. Just say that when he arrives at ISU, he's going to be a top player in the MVC. I hate hidden agendas. Guess we'll find out if it has any merit when early period opens up.

Yeah, after reading about his early september weekend (playing around Mike Dunigan-Oregon 4 star recruit), i can see why it would make everyone a little uncomfortable.

I'm not nervous at all...the coaches at ISU have been on Carl for a long time. They have a connection to him now. I don't personally see this as an issue.

This guy sounds like a huge get for the Trees! Everything I've read about him says he might just be the type of guy you build a team around. I've never seen him play, but what I've read is stellar!!!

Has anyone out there actually seen this kid in person? I'd love to hear a scouting report. (Little Eddie, are you reading this???)

Way to go KMac and GLans (OK, that's stretching it a bit, but it sounds so cool with McKenna's name...)

I believe that Medium Eddie, aka Shredder Eddie from the Bluejay Cafe, may have seen him play before. He's the relative that lives in Chicago. I'm in Omaha so I have not seen Carl play. I'll only be able to provide info on Koang when his season starts.

Sorry...my info isn't that in depth. From the sounds of it we got a good one. Him and Isiah Martin are good friends which I believe helped in landing him. Also from the sounds of it, it appears that we could have some serious high flyers in Isiah and Carl...need to have that slasher that can take it to the rack and either finish w/ authority or get to the line.

I simply like the sounds of the kid as it appears he's gaining momentum in terms of confidence. He played against great competition over the summer and held his own. I'd say the sooner we lock him up the better...he appears to have the ability to be a difference maker if he continues to improve.

Michael J. Ciepierski
TheDemonsDen.net Publisher

Talk about it in Illinois High School Basketball

Over the next week The Demons Den is going to look at the Classes of 2008, 2009, and 2010, and name the best players in categories such as the best shooter, the best rebounder, the best scorer, etc. The first class that will be looked at is the Class of 2008, which is highlighted by some of the best players in the country, such as Iman Shumpert and Michael Dunigan, but also some semi-unknowns that are the best of their trait...

Best Scorer: Nick Fruendt - Batavia - Northwestern
A couple of years ago, many said that Nick Fruendt was going to be the next Jon Scheyer, the current Duke star, because their games were so similar. The comparison could not be more correct. Although Fruendt is not to the same calibur of a scorer, he still gets the nod as being the most prolific scorer in Illinois today for the Class of 2008. Nick is a master at moving without the ball, and hitting the midrange shot. He's going to excel at Northwestern.

Best Shooter: Matt Roth - Washington - Indiana
Matt Roth isn't just the best shooter in the state, but probably the best shooter in the country regardless of class. His range extends about five feet behind the three point line, and he's going to be able to shoot from outside with ease when he enters college with the new three point line. He's really going to open up the lane for Indiana starting next year!

Best Penetrator: Lewis Jackson - Eisenhower - Purdue
Without question the fastest player in the state is Lewis Jackson, and this speed, along with his amazing ballhandling, allows him to get into the lane with ease. What is unique about Mr. Jackson is that being under six foot, he's able to finish above the rim, also making him the best athlete in the Class of 2008 for Illinois.

Best Playmaker: A.J. Rompza - Young - Central Florida
Only 5'9" and 150lbs, but such a high basketball IQ, and the know-how of getting the defense flustered and getting open shots for his teammates. A.J. possesses the best ability in the state of getting into the opponents heads, and takes advantage of it by exploiting them with assist after assist. He needs to get stronger, but has Jason Williams-like ability.

Best Rebounder: Michael Dunigan - Farragut - Oregon
By far the most talented rebounder in the state, regardless of class, is Farragut's Michael Dunigan. Michael gets excellent position on every rebound, boxing out, and outleaps his opponents. Add to this would be that Michael might be the best leader of the class.

Best Defender: John Moran - Jacobs - Northern Iowa
A fearless competitor, John Moran could be compared to current SIU point guard Bryan Mullins, as Moran just does not stay in front of his defender, but does not allow him to get to the basket. Moran possesses quick hands and even quicker feet, and the desire that is almost unmatched in the state. Outside of defense, Moran is also one of the best shooters in the state! Northern Iowa got a steal!

Best Athlete: Lewis Jackson - Eisenhower - Purdue
Another honor for Mr. Jackson! Jackson possesses the best speed in the class, as well as the best vertical leap, which is said to be 40+ inches. Jackson also plays with tremendous strength for being a small point guard. He never allows the defense to out-muscle him. Jackson might be the best athlete in the entire country regardless of class.

Most Underrated: John Shurna - Glenbard West - Northwestern
Most every Top 10 kid in the state is a household name, seeing their names in the papers, on TV, and just talked about. Well, John Shurna is a Top 10 kid from the Class of 2008 that really doesn't get the press he deserves. Although slight in frame, he plays with the heart of a lion, is able to mix it up inside with surprising athleticism, hit the outside shot, is a tremendous defender, and is one of the best passers from the high post in the entire country. Once he puts on some muscle, look for Shurna to be not only a star at Northwestern, but a great player in the Big 10.

Carl Richard - Richards - Indiana State
A few years from now people are going to be watching a Missouri Valley game, and they are going to wonder how Carl Richard went to Indiana State and not a High Major. Last year nothing much was said about Richard, who played well, but out of position. Now that he plays on the perimeter, he has shown that he has an outstanding perimeter shot, good ballhandling ability, intense defense, and he plays above the rim as good as anybody. When it's all said and done, Richard might be the best player, outside of Larry Bird, to play for ISU.

Best NBA Prospect: Iman Shumpert - Oak Park / River Forest - Georgia Tech
The best way to describe Iman Shumpert is simply saying two words: Gilbert Arenas. He's quick, outstanding jumper, great ballhandling, outstanding athleticism, high basketball IQ, and amazing desire. There are no noticeable weaknesses in his game, other than he might be too unselfish at times. Iman is one of the best guards in the entire country, and he's going to carry on the tradition of great point guards at Georgia Tech.

from the chicago tribune and the other ISU board. need to register, but a good read.....

Developing confidence and serious approach biggest keys to success for Richards standout
Barry Temkin
December 16, 2007
The basketball saga of Carl Richard may have a big ending.

His father, also named Carl, and his grandfather both had huge growth spurts after high school, so the Richards senior could wind up as some 7-foot collegiate post player instead of a 6-5 guard or small forward.

If so, it would be perfectly in keeping with a career that has been unpredictable from the start. This is, after all, a kid who at first resisted his father's entreaties to play the game, preferring to play video games instead. He made his 7th-grade team on a lark but soon stopped showing up, and he played in 8th grade only after friends talked him into it.

Richard then made the freshman team at Young and skipped the first day of practice. Young was loaded with talent, and Richard, who had a big-time hoops inferiority complex, doubted he would fit in.

"I had no confidence at all," he said Wednesday.

All that began to change during an open gym the summer before Richard's sophomore season when he simply dunked a basketball. He had done it before, but not in front of teammates, and he suddenly became the object of increased affection when it came to choosing sides for pickup games.

"I thought, 'Maybe I am getting kind of decent,'" he said. "That's when my self-esteem got a little higher.

"I got serious about basketball. It's when I really wanted to play all the time."

I think he has some solid teammates who have stepped up...hard to say from reading articles if he's in some sort of a funk or if maybe he's getting double teamed some so the others on his team are reaping the benefits. From reading articles there's at least 4 guys who can dunk on the team...even the PG dunks so he's playing w/ some other athletic guys. I just hope his team plays a few more games...get some good exposure and good experience in playing in big time, high pressured situations.

What I like about the kids coming in next year is that their teams are very succesfull and have advanced far into their respective state tournaments.

In other words, these kids are use to winning and losing would be uncomfortable for them.

Carl Richard is a big guy. I like the way he rebounds. He also has a nice shot which could be lethal since he is 6'5".

My projected line-up for next year is............

Harry Marshall
Rashad Reed
Marico Stinson
Isiah Martin
Jay Tunnell

Reserves:
Aaron Carter
Adam Arnold
Carl Richard
Tyler Cutter
Cole Holmston
Jordan Printy
Lamar Lee
Brant Leinatker
Koang Doluony
Keenan Barlow

Wow. That is the first time I have really thought about next year's line-up. If we have Aaron Carter, Carl Richard, and Tyler Cutter coming off the bench, we should be in good shape.

I'm jacked for next year.

I don't disagree with your lineup, but some say Harry would not be our first option at PG. And we still might sign 1 or 2 more which can only help us.
I definitely think Richard and AC both will be nipping at some starters' heels or even starting. I'm just hoping that we can get our best players out there and not have them playing out of position and I'm not sure what Carl's best position will be. He didn't look like a Stinson type that create shots from the perimieter, but he might be capable of that or able to by next year.
I love the versatility of AC's game and the fact that he is always looking to score.
I have no idea what role Printy or Barlow can have.
And how does Jay fit in with Martin, Richard, AC, Barlow and Stinson? Can he play D at the PF spot? Martin has the physical ability to play forward but you have to put that shot-blocking ability close to the basket.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/highschool/boysbasketball/cs-080315-richards-marshall-barry-temkin,0,3444428.column

Their performance pumped some madness back into March, and it didn't hurt that a Richards grad named Dwyane Wade added a little star power when he showed up near tipoff. It certainly energized his distant cousin, Carl Richard, and the Richards forward proceeded to score a game-high 19 points.
