In this edition, we caught up with St. Paul, Minnesota combo guard Marcus Marshall (http://www.sycamorepride.com/showthread.php?t=7060). Marshall who plays for Johnson High School during the high school season and 43 Hoops during AAU season is a talented scorer that compares favorably to 2010 Sycamore prospect Mike McCall (http://www.sycamorepride.com/showthread.php?t=2549).
McCall, who opted to sign with Rick Majerus and St. Louis averaged 10.4 points, 3 assists, 2.1 boards and a steal after redshirting last year. I think Marshall could have a similar impact if he winds up with the Sycamores. One thing is for sure, Marshall can flat out score. If you have some free time, feel free to Google Marshall's name and read some of the positive press he's been given on other team forums from around the country. Marcus also competed in the recent Illinois Adidas Phenom Top 150 Camp and performed very well.
Sycamore Pride: What is your current height and weight?
Marcus Marshall: I’m currently 6-foot-2 and weigh 180 pounds.
Sycamore Pride: How did your recent high school basketball season go? Stats?
Marcus Marshall: It went well. We finished 24-4 and 3 losses to outstate teams. I averaged 16.5 points and 4 assists per game.
Sycamore Pride: Have you set any personal goals for your upcoming AAU basketball season?
Marcus Marshall: To win some major tourneys and receive more scholarship offers.
Sycamore Pride: How would you describe your game? Are there any players (college or pro) that you try to model it after?
Marcus Marshall: I would describe my game kind of like Jacob Pullen (http://www.kstatesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/pullen_jacob01.html) from Kansas State because I can score when needed but also be a threat without the ball. I also make my teammates better.
Sycamore Pride: What do you feel is the weakest part of your game? How will you improve it?
Marcus Marshall: Finishing while taking a hit. This summer I will look forward to being in the weight room every day after practice getting stronger.
Sycamore Pride: What do you feel is the strongest part of your game?
Marcus Marshall: Creating my own shot and my shooting ability.
Sycamore Pride: Has anyone offered you a scholarship?
Marcus Marshall: Indiana State, Northern Illinois, UMKC and Green Bay have offered.
Sycamore Pride: What schools are recruiting you the hardest?
Marcus Marshall: Butler, SDSU, Iowa, and the schools that have offered.
Sycamore Pride: Do you have any favorites, a Top 5 or anything like that?
Marcus Marshall: I don’t have a top 5 but I have a few schools in mind I’ll share later.
Sycamore Pride: What kinds of things are you looking for in a school? Good academics, early playing time, specific system, etc.?
Marcus Marshall: I’m looking for a school with good history and also a great coaching staff. A place where I will fit in as a player and make an impact right away. Mainly good academics so I can be set after college.
Sycamore Pride: What position are most coaches recruiting you to play at the next level?
Marcus Marshall: Most schools are recruiting me as a combo guard. I can play both positions well. I play the 1 for my AAU team when college coaches see during the summer.
Sycamore Pride: Have you visited Indiana State yet? If not, do you have plans to get over for a visit?
Marcus Marshall: No, but I would like to. If I get a chance to, I will for sure make my way down there to check it out.
Sycamore Pride: Is there any pressure by your family to stay close to home?
Marcus Marshall: No.
Sycamore Pride: Do you have a timetable set for your decision?
Marcus Marshall: Maybe after the summer to see all of my options. I want to make sure I make the right decision.
